BREAKING BARRIERS PROJECT
Breaking Barriers is a multi- country project started in 2006 till June 2010 and implemented in Uganda, Kenya and Zambia. In Uganda, the Project is implemented in the districts of Luwero, Kamuli and Tororo by Save the Children in Uganda, The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda and Plan International.

The overall goal of BB project is to expand equitable, effective and high quality OVC programs in education, Psycho- social support and home based care for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. The intervention uses school infrastructure and religious institutions as a coordinated platform for rapid scale up, expansion and sustainability.

Using religious leaders on their pastoral activities and home visits, the Project targets Orphans and vulnerable children and their families who are affected/ infected by HIV/AIDS, by providing them with Psycho-social support services and other un met material needs that prevent OVC from accessing education.

Religious leaders also integrate massages of OVC care and support, stigma and discrimination related to HIV/ AIDS in their sermons and bulletins which are given during prayer and other religious functions and activities.

Currently the project has reached 5,155 children with direct support, distributed 2,520 ITNS to 840 households and trained 394 religious leaders to provide such services.

Other interventions have included training 384 religious leaders in Psycho- social support, stigma and discrimination reduction and training 945 community based caregivers in positive parenting skills besides facilitating their mobility with 150 bicycles.

IRCU plays an immense role in district based advocacy through review of the current educational policies/ legislations to promote OVC access to education, distribution of IEC materials relating to education, health and food security ; resource mobilization, agitating for increased budget allocations to the education and enacting bi-laws that favor education of OVC.
