“Ethical Leadership and the Challenge of Endemic Corruption”

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE INTER-RELIGIOUS COUNCIL OF UGANDA ON THE LATEST EPISODES OF CORRUPTION IN UGANDA

Fellow Ugandans,

We have been following with keen interest and pain the latest episodes of massive theft of public resources in the Public Service and the Office of the Prime Minister. Most perturbing to us is the fact that these incidences are not isolated. Rather, they are part of a systemic and structural decay in the governance of public resources and affairs in our country. We have witnessed continuously in the last two decades breathtaking incidences of grand theft and abuse of public resources, some of which have involved top Government officials. We recall the valley dam saga, the junk military hardware saga, the Uganda Commercial Bank saga, the CHOGM saga, the Local Council Bicycle saga, and the pension fund saga.

In all these cases, we have seen little action taken to recover lost funds even when culprits have been convicted in courts of law. This is very bad for our country struggling to overcome poverty and underdevelopment.
