Women in Agribusiness Week (WAW) starts

The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, in partnership with the Department of Women, Gender, and Development Studies and other partners, has kicked off the Women in Agribusiness Week with the aim of showcasing the efforts of women in agribusiness.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs. Florence Musoke, the chairperson of the Interfaith Women Network of Uganda at the IRCU, challenged women to be business-oriented as they go about farming. “Farming is a business and can be profitable if you are intentional. We should take farming as a business,” said Mrs. Musoke.

While delivering the keynote address, the Director of Makerere University Institute for Women and Gender Studies, Associate Professor Ruth Nsibirano, said climate change is a significant threat to women, who are the largest number of smallholder farmers, and there is a need to train them on how to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change. “Women have many solutions, and those in agribusiness already have solutions in value addition; they just need a favorable work environment,” said Dr. Ruth Nsibirano.

The Women in Agribusiness Week began on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, and will end on November 6th, 2025, under the theme “Women Designing Climate-Smart Agriculture.” The week also involves an exhibition of different agribusiness products by women from Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and Cameroon.
